Look at the image and explain was done technically to convey the meaning and mood of this image? What is the mood of this image? What is the photographer saying or what story is being told here? What emotion is evoked inside of you? Using your knowledge of framing, angles, elements/principles of design, placement and lighting (as well as your awareness of how images are subjective to the viewer) thoughtfully deconstruct this image and explain how it is a significant image. Discuss the technical process that was used to achieve this.

1) This photo is by Manuel Alvarez Bravo. The mood of this image, to me, is gloomy and dark. The photographer has the image darker and in black and white which helps with the mood of the photo. Also, the girl is staring off and leaning over the railing looking depressed or upset. This also helps create the mood of the image. When i look at this image, I feel almost scared or sad. The way that the image came out makes it look dark and evokes a sad or scared emotion inside of me. I feel that this girl had lost something or someone or had a tragic accident in her life due to the feeling that this image is giving off. Also, that the girl looks as if she is thinking and is reflecting back on a memory or previous event in her life. This image is very significant due to the use of the elements and principles of design. There is a great contrast between the blacks and whites in this photo and it also has excellent value of the darks and lights. These bring out the meaning of the image and allow the viewer to connect to the photo. It is also significant because the lighting of the photo helps bring out the emotion in the picture. The lighting allows you to view the left side of the girl and part of her face to allow the viewer to undertand what se is feeling. The contrast value and lighting all fit in and tie together to bring out the mood of the image. This image seems like it was taken in a slower shutter speed which allowed more light into the picture.

2) This photo was taken by Dorothea Lange. I feel that the mood of this image is almost depressing. This lady looks as if she is unhappy with what she has done and is very stressed out. This image makes me feel bad for the lady because she looks so upset. It also could have the idea of the coming of age and how this lady remembered when she was young and now her life is coming to an end but a new one is beginning. She looks very unhappy and it almost seems as she is missing something important or thinking back to when she was a kid. This image has great contrast with the black and white and aslo as the other image, great value between the darks and lights. The light in this image draws you to the faces of the people in this image and allows you to really view and feel the emotion that the lady is feeling. This image is significant because it shows the values of photography in the areas of lighting and in the elements and principles of design. I believe that this image was taken in a high shutter speed because it is frozen motion. The older lady's hair is frozen as it was blowing in the wind. Everything is still and very beautiful.

3) This image was taken by Doug Ricard. This image to me, feels bright and suspicious. This photo has very bright colors and is very appealing to the eye. I feel it is suspicious because the third guy in the photo looks as if he is creeping across the street coming from something he had done. This photo seems very fun and is easy to enjoy looking at. I feel like Ricard is trying to show that these three men are having a good time. I really like how this photo uses lines to draw you from the men all the way to the very back of the photo. It allows the viewer to really see the whole picture and admire the entire scenery. I really enjoy this picture and its colors. This image is a significant image due to the use of these beautiful colors, the lines, and the movement shown by the men and by the cars in the background. This picture was taken in a high shutter speed because it captured the movement of the guys walking and froze it along with the frozen movement of the cars. This image also seems to be in low depth of field because of the blurriness in the background of the image.

4) This photograph was taken by Herb Ritts. This woman in the photo is very happy and gives off a happy emotion. When i look at this image it makes me have a good feeling. This lady has a warm smile and seems to be in a good mood. She seems happy with life and is having a good time. The light in this photo seems to be strong everywhere but especially coming from the right side of the image. I feel like Ritts is showing this lady as loving life and being happy with what she has. This photo unlike the others, seems to be more of a portrait and almost seems as it could be used as an advertisement. I do not feel that you would see this on a wall or in a museum. This photo has a very good contrast and has very good value like the other two black and white pictures. It also has good texture in showing the lady's face. I feel likeI could reach out and touch her skin on her face and feel the wrinkles. This photo is very significant because of these principles and elements. This photo was shot in a high shutter seed because of the low depth of field. This woman's blazer and neck seem to be a little out of focus as well as her left ear. This photo gives off a very positive vibe and is very interesting.

5) This image was taken by Duane Michals. This picture was used in our slow shutter speed presentation. This image evokes a gloomy feeling. It is as if the man is looking over at his own dead body. The mood of this image seems dark and depressing.
this could be due to the times that Duane Michals was going through in his life. This photo is shot in a bulb shutter speed which means that it could go until you want it to stop. DUane Michals shot this so slow that he could lay down get up and then stand over his body causing the image to look as it does. It is very fascinating how a camera could do something like that. This photo has good contrast between the darks and lights and has great value. The light in this photo also contributes to the feeling. The light comes from the left of the image giving the shadow behind the standing guy. This helps give the darkness behind him and really show the gloominess. It is a very significant photo in the subject of photography because it has many ideas that a photographer could use in one image. This picture really is a great image. It inflicts great emotion and gives the viewer a good story to portray and feel.
